Kairos of Modern Environmentalism

In this modern era (2010- present) people are exposed to world in much faster way through social media and internet. For instance, the tragic Gulf Oil Spill of 2010 , social media quickly called the attention to the negative environmental impacts of the pipeline, including the immense increase in carbon pollution.  People, right from common man to a scientist, all over the world aggregate via internet raising awareness about Global warming, green house gases and depletion of ozone layer.  In this era people are more concerned broadly about Global warming and climate change rather than specifically on air pollution. Considering the 2010, November poll 70 percent consider global warming to be extremely, 27 percent very, and 72 percent believe that it is mostly caused by humans.

It is intuitive that creator of the poster was driven by kairos movements of the modern era where people are more concerned on climate change and global warming. In the picture above the melting of the ice represents Earth and the water depicts the raising of sea levels.

  1. I like how you mentioned the role that social media plays in environmentalism because now it's true that a lot of information is produced and distributed through websites like Facebook or Twitter. I agree that social media has played such a big role because it is the fastest way to reach the highest number of individuals as possible. I think that in order to strengthen your argument you could compare the ways that environmentalism was spread now versus in the 1960s and use that as evidence to support why there is more awareness about global warming in the present.

  2. I thought that the Gulf Oil Spill of 2010 and poll on global warming were interesting facts, however, they were so specific and not enough to create the "kairos movements of the modern era" that you mentioned in your final paragraph. In order to better evaluate the kairos for the modern era, you should try focusing on more broad, big-picture events or concepts that significantly contributed to the kairos of modern environmentalism. For example, I would talk about the increase in environmental awareness through media, environmental organizations (i.e. EPA), the expansion of environmental science education, public concern for the environment, the widespread use of recycling, sustainability efforts in businesses and cities, and hybrid cars.

  3. My main problem with your post is with some factual and grammatical errors. The Gulf oil spill was not due to a pipeline, it was due to an oil well explosion. Also, the major source of pollution was the crude oil in the ocean not any of the carbon dioxide emitted. When you brought up the poll you said "70 percent consider global warming to be extremely, 27 percent very", but you did not say what they thought was very or extremely. Finally, the ozone layer is actually returned to where it was before CFCs. I do agree with your main points that environmentalism has expanded to encompass all climate change and that the internet has enabled even the common man to learn about global climate change. Just make sure you fact check and reread sentences to make sure they make sense.

  4. Overall I think your post was good but I think that you should have focused more or led into the advertising aspect of global warming and how it relates to Kairos. You could use the sudden spike in temperatures seen across the globe and how it is advertized in the media to connect with your poster because there is no clear transition from global warming to the poster mentioned. I also think that you can go more in depth with your analysis on the Kairos of today's environmental movement.
